High-class volleyball in front of record-breaking scenery in Max-Schmeling-Halle: The BERLIN Recycling Volleys hosted the Final Four of CEV Champions League for the first time in Germany and celebrated a real volleyball party. In the end the home heroines cheered their bronze medal.

Though on Saturday they had their share of ups and downs in the semifinal match with hosts BERLIN Recycling Volleys, on their D-Day Zenit KAZAN were able to live up to their status as red-hot favourites for the crown of this year’s CEV DenizBank Volleyball Champions League – Men. The Tatars cruised to a speedy 3:0 win over Poland’s Asseco Resovia RZESZOW (25-22, 25-23, 25-21) to seize their third title in Europe’s elite competition – they had already topped the charts in 2008 and 2012 – and get the right to compete at this year’s FIVB Volleyball Men’s Club World Championship scheduled for late October in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. The man of the match – and top scorer with 18 points – was once again the eventual MVP of the Final Four tournament, Cuban-born Wilfredo Leon.

A historic day for a historic Final Four tournament at the Max-Schmeling-Halle in Germany’s capital got started with hosts BERLIN Recycling Volleys cruising to a 3:2 victory (25-21, 19-25, 25-20, 26-28, 23-21) over Poland’s PGE Skra BELCHATOW in the ‘small final’ to notch their first medal in Europe’s elite league. This is to be added to the bronze medals won by SCC BERLIN – the team’s previous denomination – in the 1999 edition of the CEV Volleyball Cup and in the 2010 CEV Volleyball Challenge Cup.

The semi-finals of the 2015 CEV Volleyball Champions Final Four are already history. 9,300 spectators saw an expected 3:1 (26:24, 21:25, 25:22, 25:15) win by Zenit KAZAN and a thrilling match between the Polish teams with the luckier end for Asseco Resovia RZESZOW which made the final surprisingly in straight sets (25:23, 25:23, 25:22).

Asseco Resovia RZESZOW continued their triumphal march in the 2015 CEV DenizBank Volleyball Champions League by sweeping aside their countrymen of PGE Skra BELCHATOW (25-23, 25-23, 25-22) in the much anticipated Polish derby played on Saturday night at the Max-Schmeling-Halle in Berlin. The players in red and white shirts – making their first Final Four appearance in history – delivered a strong performance and profited of the many problems showed by their opponents to cruise to a straight-set win which provides them with the right to challenge Russia’s Zenit KAZAN in the gold medal match on schedule for Sunday at 3:45pm CET. The eventual winner will also get the right to represent Europe at the FIVB Volleyball Men’s Club World Championship in Brazil.

As the organisers set an all-time record for Volleyball competitions at the Max-Schmeling-Halle with 9,300 fans in attendance, the BERLIN Recycling Volleys put on a real fight in their match with Russia’s giant Zenit KAZAN and at a certain stage they seemed able to pose a real threat to their star-studded opponent. However, after going through many highs and lows, the Tatars imposed their rule and could celebrate a 3:1 victory (26-24, 21-25, 25-22, 25-15) to get the right for their third title in the CEV DenizBank Volleyball Champions League on Sunday. The men of the match were definitely Maxim Mikhailov and especially Wilfredo Leon who showed his class throughout the game to keep KAZAN on route to a third crown in Europe’s elite competition following their wins in 2008 and 2012.

Everything is set for a terrific Volleyball show as the city of Berlin is about to play host to the Final Four tournament of the 2015 CEV DenizBank Volleyball Champions League – Men. The organisers are about to set an all-time record of attendance for a Volleyball competition at the Max-Schmeling-Halle as the provision of extra tribunes has increased its capacity to 9,350 seats.

This weekend the Final Four tournament of the 2015 CEV DenizBank Volleyball Champions League – Men is taking place at the Max-Schmeling-Halle in Berlin with a good share of the world’s best players fighting for Europe’s most coveted crown and for the right to represent the Old Continent at this year’s FIVB Volleyball Men’s Club World Championship.
